Länken högst upp visar ett antal kända platser i världen, så som vi är vana att se dem från bilder i t.ex. turistbroschyrer och guideböcker. Sedan jämförs dessa med bilder tagna på lite avstånd, så att man ser hur det ser ut runt omkring dessa platser.

Som det står i inledningen har ju omgivningen förändrats sedan byggnaderna uppfördes. En del av platserna är fortfarande häftiga på lite avstånd, en del bara ”dör”. Till exempel känns inte Brandenburger Tor lika häftig på bilden som visar hur den ligger i förhållande till byggnaderna omkring.

Det är inte bara byggnadsverk som visas, till exempel är Mona Lisa med också. Det som slår mig när jag tittar på den bilden är att det förmodligen inte är en enda som tittar på de övriga målningar som hänger i samma rum. Det lär nog vara världens mest otacksamma plats för ett konstverk.

Den sista bilden är den roligaste, tyckte jag och maken. ”Det är ju bara att springa runt”, var vår kommentar.

Här hittade jag ett kul inlägg om djur på byggnader i Helsingfors och Riga. Jag har varit i Helsingfors flera gånger men inte tänkt på det här. Riga har jag inte varit i, så det är väl dags att åka till båda ställena och fota fasader!

If you’ve ever lived in a big city, you know that your chances of seeing wild animals are pretty slim … unless you go to the zoo.

Evidently, European architects at the beginning of the 20th century felt the same way, so they started incorporating wildlife into the newest architectural trend – Art Nouveau.

When we started our Baltic journey in Helsinki, Finland, we soon realized that everywhere we looked there were animals adorning the buildings. Some were embedded in balconies and doorways; others sat proudly atop pedestals and rooflines. Most were surprisingly realistic, but a few took a fanciful twist.

Our curiosity was aroused so we did some research, looking for explanations. The answers were fascinating.

The weather map in the morning paper said it all: one oval isobar, a lazy ridge of high pressure lapping at the shores of the British Isles. Nothing like it for the whole of this damp, drab summer. Early on, with the dog in the park, there had been frost, now the sky was an expanse of blue, transmitting from beyond the city, as Robert Macfarlane put it in The Wild Places, ‘a longing for surfaces other than glass, brick, concrete and tarmac’.

In my mind I saw an upland ridge, expansive views across peaceful vales to mountains and the sea: and so we headed out of Liverpool, thirty miles to the Clwydian hills, and one and a half millenia back in time to Offa’s Dyke.

It’s been a month since I arrived back from Morocco and I think I’ve just about recovered! In my first post, Monkeys mountains and the Medina, I mentioned that everything in this diverse, vibrant place was enchanting and beautiful. As a result, I thought I should probably share a few more of my 4000+ photos.

I’ve gone for a less intense location for my next trip abroad, Berlin, but I’m sure it will still have plenty to offer my lens!
